Losing the Minimum

I enjoy playing limit poker. Limit suits my style better than NL. Thats a fact. When I set my mind to it I can make NL work. In fact, online I play mostly NL. So there is this saying that is a bit of a concept. Getting to show down with a hand that may not be good as cheaply as possible.

Basically you hear about it thusly.

I had Aces cracked by Q2 but I lost the minimum.

There is a corollary to losing the minimum. I call it "not winning the maximum" you might also call it "winning the minimum" but I like the negative connotation of "not". So lets say you flop a set and the board straightens on the river. How do you play the hand? How do you maximize the payoff when the straight doesn't beat you and minimize when it does?

I play these hands to weakly. I too often let my opponent off with too few bets on the end. I don't maximize my winning hands. You have to understand in the limit games I play in there is rarely a chopped blind and seldom does a hand not go to showdown.

On the end if I am out of position and heads up, its easy to showdown getting one or two bets in. Two bets is something I can absorb. In position heads up if my opponent leads I have a tougher decision. If I raise I may be looking at three bets to show down.

I am starting to try and let the overall quality of the table make these decisions for me. Gary Carson talks quite a bit about playing the table versus playing opponents. If the table is loose and consistently showing raggedy two pairs then I am more likely to to put the extra bet in. In this situation I figure my aggression pays off more times than not and I get a good aggressive image out of it.

Very rarely am I faced with a tight table. Just the occasional tight player, or known commodity. So I do take specific players into account.

This is something I am working on. My last session I counted 4 times I should have put in an extra bet and once where I wanted to raise, but didn't and found out I was beat at showdown. So one session I could have been net two big bets. Not a trend but its enough to make me pay attention and think really hard about trying to "win the maximum"

________________

Pumping draws is great if you can get them to hit. The only straight I pumped and hit was turned and then rivered by a flopped two pair boating up. Totally frustrating is it to pump a draw in a three or four way pot only to not get there. Set are gold, don't forget it. A wise dwarf once told me if you lose with a set and don't go broke, you played it wrong.

Tack on 3 more

Up and down night at the boat last night. Before we start with the play lets talk about the operations of the new casino. Last night was a bit of an adventure. First the single cage problem was exacerbated last night because the ATM's were out of cash. So to get cash (and I think to cash out slot tickets) you had to hit the machine, get a slip of paper and go to the cage. The cage line move fast but still looks awful when you step up and there are 50 people standing in line.

Finally get chips and head over to the poker room to see the floor slide two people onto the list in front of me. WTF? Here's a tip, apparently to get seated immediately you just have to go the desk and say "My name was on the list and now its gone". Again, whiskey tango foxtrot. Still not bad - from the time I left home until I was on a table was 1 hour.

Finally get a seat and the table starts out to be nitty. Then all of the sudden it opens up. I flop a set and get paid off. A guy gets KK cracked by Q2 and its on. I run up 20 big bets in about 40 minutes.

One interesting hand. I am out of position in the seven seat. 1 seat is the cut off and 2 seat is the button. Action is calm on the flop, and I turn two pair on the turn. We get 3 or 4 bets in and 1 seat is all in. River is dealt and the 1 seat audibly "harumphs", picks up his cards and shows the 2 seat. I see this as does the guy in the 5 seat. Marty will remember the 5 seat as the Carlos Mencia look alike guy that played every pot last weekend.

I tell the dealer "Uh yeah, the one seat just showed his cards to the two seat". He asks me to clarify. "The one seat picked up his cards and showed them to the two seat?" Dealer asks if I want him to call the floor. I say no. One seat is visibly flustered, knows he made a mistake and just folds before I can act. I check and 2 seat checks and I take down the pot. 2 seat swears that he didn't see the the one seats cards. I find that hard to believe as the one seat picked them up and showed them to him.

If I call the floor is the two seat's hand dead? The one seat's?

So anyway I end the night with two brutal suck outs, a 4 outer and a 3 outer, both on the river, to give back most of my winnings and only cashed out up 3 bb's.

What's that smell?

Q: How do you know your blog is in trouble?

A: When you have three contributors and BG has posted 7 entries since your last update. Of course negative points to BG since he apparently has started to shill. Not that I am against shilling, I just would have expected him to shill for the Billy Mays Insta-Braiser.

But in all seriousness I can't complain as I have become mostly a Twit of late. But that is about to change.

New Year's Resolutions: More Live Poker and Less Spare Tire.

How am I going to accomplish such a feet? For every 30 minutes that I work out I get some amount of time at the boat. I think I am going to shoot for 30 to 30. So if I get on the ol' cross training for two 30 minute sessions a day, come Saturday night I get five hours at the boat.

Or, I can stockpile time for a trip to Tunica. I might be on to something here.

Trip reports.

I have been to the new casino twice now. Things are still running a bit rough. Mostly I think they have too many floor men working all, of the same level, too many chiefs and no one is in control. The inability to lock up a seat and get chips at the table is annoying. Many people say you can buy chips from the table games, but the last time I was there, they wouldn't let me. The good news is that the main cage runs fast, as long as its fully staffed and they have expediters placed at either end to hustle people to open windows.

The cage is built in a semi-circle, so if you're online you can't see the open windows around the way. If the cage windows were in a straight line they could reassign the two expediters to some other task. So the poor cage design essentially costs them two additional FTE during busy times. Poor design leading to additional variable costs. Also again - the poker room desperately needs its own cage.

Two trips and I have only played 3/6 LHE. The dealers span the range of Very good to Very Bad. One dealer at my last session forgot to deal the button his second card, miss calculated the side pot and forgot to deal the river in a single hand. Yikes! Pretty much at the new place the the good dealers are the younger guys and the bad dealers are the older women. One women had a down where the number of hands was at least halved because she was so slow. She put a rather gamblely table to sleep. The next guy stepped in and was slightly faster than average and seemed like the flash.

Results time. First trip I cam home up 42 big bets. Next trip I came home up 1 BB. Just didn't hit any draws and got AA roached by AK but managed to lose the minimum.

The tables are racetrack style ala the MGM. A style that I really like but many people hate. Also since the felt is brown sometime the reddish and brownish back cards get lost. Everything in the place is a '70's orange and brown. Bathroom is close enough to the poker room that you might make it and not miss a hand. I can't wait for games after baseball or football games. Should be real good. Hockey hasn't been too much of a boon to the poker room. Both nights I have been down there it was after a Hockey game. you see people in jerseys walking around, but not a lot of drunken idiot LHE play.

Spread is typically 3/6 and 1/3 NL with $300 max. When they spread 1/2 it may or may not be $100 max - uber ick. As I start to work my live bankroll back into shape I will be venturing into the 1/3 game. My take is that they are filled with two types of players: nits and kill phils. The 3/6 game is filled with chasers. There is a BBJ, which I don't mind as I am not a professional and that keeps the 3/6 game nice an loose, just how I like it.

Cell phone reception can be spotty, strangely my phone works in the bathroom and not out on the floor.
